Listen to Born and Bred – Stories of Holloway Road, a Rowan Arts project which tells the stories of 51 people with a connection to Holloway Road, half of whom were born and raised in Islington and half from other parts of London.
A team of 38 volunteers and staff worked on the project for a year. Trained by oral history experts and photographer Tim Mitchell, they carried out interviews, took photographs and helped to collect additional material. The interview extracts that appear in the book are taken from the full audio interviews, which can be listened to on this website.
Holloway Road is busy, noisy, vibrant and full of characters. From local business owners like Mathew Dickinson, florist to the biggest names in London, and Ian Bailey, whose family-run bookbinders has been going strong since the 1880s, to local residents like Lillian Cawkell, who lived in Holloway through World War II.
